To Weigh Gold

Weights and measure system varied from region to region, commodity to commodity, and rural to urban areas. The weights were based on the weight of various seeds, specially the wheat berry, Barley corn and Ratti. British used weight of wheat berries as a standard to make currency coins. British chose Barley corn to weigh gold. Eventually, British introduced their own system, Troy ounce, for weighing gold. India used Ratti which is seed of a plant 'Abrus precatorius'.

Troy system (British System):

1 pennyweight = 24 Grains
1 Pennyweight =1.555 Grams
1 Grain = 0.648 Grams
1 Troy Ounce = 480 Grains
1 Troy Ounce = 31.103 Grams
1 Gram = 15.432 Grains
20 Pennyweight = 1 Troy Ounce (oz)
12 Troy Ounce (oz) = 1 troy Pound (lb)

Indian System:

1 Dhan = weight of one wheat berry
4 Grain of Rice = 1 Dhan
4 Dhan = 1Ratti
8 Ratti  = 1 Masha
12 Masha = 1 Tola (Bhori)
6 Ratti = 1 Ana
16 Ana = 1 Bhori (Tola)
96 Ratti = 1 Tola
